7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite with WiFi out February 8

Samsung Electronics yesterday announced a slimmer, more portable Galaxy Tab 3 tablet aimed at consumers interested in an affordable tablet in the 7-inch form factor in Singapore. For easy comparison, the iPad Mini has an 7.9-inch display, while the Asus Google Nexus 7 has a 7-inch display.

The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite WiFi joins the multi-faceted Galaxy Tab 3 family, which includes models specially for children as well as devices in 7-inch, 8-inch and 10.1-inch display sizes that run on the local LTE mobile broadband networks.

Samsung has focused on the user experience for the new model, particularly for gaming, watching videos and surfing the Internet. The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite WiFi sports a 1.2GHz Dual Core processor, against the Galaxy Tab 3 LTE model, which has a 1.7GHz Dual Core processor, and is also billed as being small enough to carry one-handed.

However, Samsung says the new device has a more compact bezel, making it even more comfortable to carry around in one hand. The menu bar is situated on the device’s bezel, rather than on the screen, in order to maximise the wide-screen experience for users. The company says the 3,600mAh battery can power up to eight hours of video playback.

The device also hosts a two megapixel rear-facing camera with features including Smile Shot, which enables the camera to automatically shoot when a smile is detected, Shoot & Share that enables users to share images right after they are captured, and Panorama Shot so that users can capture their favourite landscapes. In contrast, its LTE cousin has a three megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera.

Accessories in black and white for the GALAXY Tab 3 Lite WiFi include:

  • The GALAXY Tab 3 Lite WiFi Book cover, priced at S$68
  • A 9000mAh battery pack, which costs $118
  • A wired headset with remote control, which is also available in green, pink and blue at S$28

The GALAXY Tab 3 Lite WiFi will be available in white from 8 February 2014 at S$198 at major consumer electronics and IT stores, as well as at Samsung Experience Stores.
